Margaret,

I was talking to Janet, just before the end of last year, but as I haven't heard from her or seen any posts about a get together I thought it was not going to happen.

Thanks I will pm her.

David, Are you a member of the Santiago Forum? jl from the forum (Janet) has been running some Camino information courses in Adelaide, and I think she is interested in organising some kind of get together in the next few months. You could maybe PM her on the forum...

I would like to be there but living in SA makes it a tad on the expensive side. If there is any interest in a similar get together in Adelaide then perhaps we should organize it.

Cheers
David

In November I was subjected to a radical prostatectomy as cancer had developed in my prostate. I was lucky as I had awareness of this disease and had been tracking my PSA for many years. So far all is successful and the cancer beaten and my fitness has returned. Many men are not as lucky as 3,300 die of this nasty cancer every year in Australia. Each day 32 more men are diagnosed and 1 in 9 men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. I also am aware that many men do not take this seriously and there is a lack of awareness in our society especially when compared with woman’s breast cancer.

My “Pilgrims Walk for Prostate Cancer” will take me to Spain where I intend to walk the Camino de Santiago ( The way of St James ) from St Jean Pied de Port in France to Santiago de Compostela on the far west of Spain 798.6 km.

As my major interest over the last twenty years has been trekking and climbing I decided to take this journey, one, as of saying thanks to “life” and being alive, two to raise money for prostate cancer research and three to increase awareness so men make sure they understand that regular testing is required, and if caught early can prevent death, or slow down the effects from this cancer.

Hi Richard and welcome. Not sure if you have also joined the Forum or not- Ivar set both of them up. Ivar has just given us an Australian and New Zealand section over there. It is a separate joining process though, but you might even discover some 'neighbours' as time goes on and the threads build up...

Great news David. I have been wondering when the programme would be on.
I live in Perth but had just returned from my camino when the Camino Salvado was advertised and could not go. When visiting Samos Monastery in 2007 a monk showed us the statue of Dom Salvado.

Posted this on the blog page, but on second thoughts it might be better here.

This might be of interest to some of you, it's on Compass 2 April 2010.

It's about, a modern day revival in the age-old habit of pilgrimage, and parishioners from St Joseph’s Church in Subiaco, Perth are creating Australia’s first: Camino Salvado. Compass joins the inaugural
pilgrimage for a six day walk from Perth to the Benedictine Monastery
at New Norcia. The Camino Salvado follows in the footsteps of Spanish
monk, Dom Rosendo Salvado. In the mid-1800s he walked to from Perth to
New Norcia many times as he built a unique aboriginal mission, enduring
tragedy and hardship along the way. Now a century and half later, 30
pilgrims will explore the modern day appeal of an age old tradition,
and learn about the history of Dom Salvado’s historic journeys.

cheers
David
